Is the trend in America now to give children the most unique name possible?

A couple in Mississippi named their new son ESPN Montana (they will pronounce it Es-pen). He was named after the sports network and former NFL hall of fame quarterback Joe Montana.

Is the current trend to name children with the most unique possible? How will these children fare as adults with these unique names? Please share your opinions on this.

I think odd names like that are stupid including my own. My parents made up my name and I actually found out many people have the exact name or even more have similiar name to mine. It has never bothered or hindered me, but it is a little weird when I go for job interviews. Many people think it is unique. I wish my parents would not have experimented with something as important as my name.
Reply:Yes.
Reply:Well I really do believe that there is a very thin line between being unique and being just out right rediculous. Some of these parents need to realize that a name that they think is precious, unique, cute or intelligent sounding may not be the most advantageous moniker for the little tyke as he goes through life. There are perfectly good names such as Ralph, Herman, Ebenezer and Jebediah to choose from.
Reply:I htink that some unique names are cute - like i have a friend named Masslyn. but some are a little wierd. I think that because we are americans and our language comes from the languages of other countrys that a lot of our names also come from these other countrys.
Reply:i guese whites are now barrowing the african american trademarks when it comes to baby names . the society are tired of common or popular names like john , mary so they want to coin new names that no one has .
Reply:Yes that seems to be the trend, name your children the most unique names you can come up with. And then people such as teachers have to try and say them. It is really outrageous. People should be very mindful that there children are going to grow up and be adults one day. Then with some of these silly names try to get a job somewhere and taken seriously. It is a sad reality, in my opinion, they should have given that name to their dog or cat or bird or something other than their child. God Bless.
Reply:I see your point. I thought I heard that in some recent year, 25% of AfroAmerican baby girls in CA were THE ONLY person in their state with their name!
