Would be rather have a very popular name, or a very unique name?

Would you rather have a common name, where every 5th person you met has that name, and where it would be hard to form your own identity as it is so popular? or would you rather have a unique name, where you can easily form your own identity, but where people struggle to spell/pronounce it and you have to correct people all the time, or even people look at you weird when you say it..?

Would be rather have a very popular name, or a very unique name?
I would want something in between, which is pretty hard to find. I have a unique name that teachers can never pronounce and sometimes classmates make fun of. My parents also created a nickname for me, but it wasn't much better. It was easy to spell and pronounce, but it was made fun of even more.

On the other hand, I've seen my friends who go by their last names sometimes, have a letter tacked on to the back of their name, or are known by their full name. They turn around every time they hear their name in the hall and gets mixed up often.

But like they say: the grass is always greener on the other side of the hill, so I would prefer a normal name over my unique one.
Reply:It depends... As I've gotten older, I love my name. When I was a little girl, it was frustrating not being able to find items with my name on them (which is easier to deal with now in 2008 than it was in 1978).

I would say unique is better than over-popular. My husband and I chose semi-unique names when we had our children and our kids haven't had any problems:

Mattea Frances (feminine form of Matthew)

Mariah Cathryn (which after we used it, it became popular)

Madalyn Theresa (Same thing happened)

Joel Zachary (common Biblical name, but not over-used)
Reply:Not all unique names are hard to say, like Jodi, Alia, Sheena

Not all common names are easy to say, like Nevaeh

There all more names that falls in the middle

When I named my daughter Hayley in 2000. It was a top 100 name, but it was common in the south. I do not live in the south. When I named her, I got that's a pretty name, you do not hear that a lot. I get know, why did I name her such a common name.

Some names are common in one part of the country and not the other. Some names take off

If my daughter was a year to older, she would of been the only Hayley in her class. She is not

Sometime with all the thought you put in a name, it comes common

Peyton, a few years ago, not common. A football player made it common, there are a lot of boys and girls with that name.
Reply:I would rather have a unique name, but not so unique as to beign made fun of a lot. My first name is Randall, which isn't quite as unique as I would like, but it's not that common of a name.

So you could just kinda go down the middle like my parents did.

PS: Make sure you look at what your kid's initials will be. Ulysis S Grant (I know I spelled it wrong), his original initials were HUG, so he changed his first and middle name so he wouldn't be beat up in the military.

Good luck.
Reply:unique , i have a unique name not used all the time and its makes you stand out at times and it does get bothersome trying to pronounce it but it also is a good way to start a conversation.

My future daughter will have either Ariel or Athena or both Ariel Athena as a name. Both picked out by me and my fiance. Ariel was picked by the father because he likes the name and though she will be may picked on because of the Little Mermaid she will also know that there is a guy that is named that as well and is part of history. I picked Athena because I love mythology and I would want my child to be very wise and smart but also strategical in battle. Not just physical fighting but in even word bouts :D

So being different is always not a hassle.
Reply:I child's name is not their identity. This is made up of their personality and how they choose to live their life. Personally, it would drive me crazy if I had to correct people all of the time. My name is Kristin and people mess that up (the spelling) but at least it's not something strange. As a teacher, I can't help but to feel bad when I get students with these crazy names that nobody can pronounce. It's awful for a child to have to go through that.
Reply:My name's common--Jennifer--and I have never disliked it. Having other people with your name is actually comforting when you're little, rather than having to spell your name three times and explain how to pronounce it. Never had the least problem forming my own identity. Don't know why anyone would assume that.
Reply:I would go with unique vs. popular.

It was so hard for me to find a unique name, being a teacher I have heard tons of names, nick names and the teasing. For my daughter I chose Frida (I believe it's unique, although her middle name is Isabela after my grandmother, but a current super popular name). She can use her middle name if she wishes later. Fun question!
Reply:i would rather have a very unique name because if very few people have that name, I'd be different and that would make me a fun person. Of course, my name is not that unique (Its Sara) but I love correcting people when they spell it with an 'h' because you dont normally see alot of "Sara's". You see "Sarah's".

Good luck!

Reply:Unique. My last name is ridiculous, no one can pronounce it. And I love it because once someone sees my last name, they remember me forever. My brother is 8 years younger than me and goes to all the same schools I did. As soon as teachers see his name, they always know hes related to me. Its nice. My first name is Jacquelyn, Jackie for short, which is kind of middle ground. We had 2 other Jackies in my school, but none in my grade. At least I wasn't a Laura or Ashley. We had a couple million of them.
Reply:Unique names.

Common noo !

like i would like , like Unique but not like a werid name.

i like the name

Jazlynn Aundrea

%26amp;

Xavier Isaiah

Because i have a common name and lots of people have my name %26amp; its anoyy !!
Reply:Neither- I like having a name that everyone is familar with, but people generally don't know many people with the name. My name is like that. Everyone has heard of it, but most people only know me with that name. My sister has a name like that. Her name is Gwendolyn (she goes by Gwen). Everyone has heard the name, but not that many people have it.
Reply:My name is Hawaiian, so I always have to tell everyone how to pronounce my name. I think it's really fun to have a unique name. If you have the same name as everyone, it'll be hard to talk about a group of people that almost all have the same name.
Reply:I have a unique name, but it's not unique in the Hispanic world. Everyone mistakes me for Rachel. OK, Since when does the name Rachel, have a Q and a U? Lmao retardos. But nah, I would name my kid a unique name but at the same time not a ghetto unique name where you can't get a job lol.
Reply:I would rather have a more common name. You don't need a unique name to form a unique identity. The more popular names are more popular for a reason - because they are timeless and beautiful.
Reply:Unique or just not that common. My name is not that common, but yet, I've heard of it of course and there are different spellings of it. I like unusual names, but nothing that sounds really odd and stupid like most celebrities do.
Reply:unique name b/c everyone has my name which is crystal.. and every time i think of my name the word slut comes to mind.. every other crystal i've known is a slut.. so i rather had a unique name
Reply:i would have a unique name cause commons names are old fashion(lol) and try to use a different name i read in a magazine that is u name a baby a unique name the will be unique
Reply:Unique name is better.

Reply:I would rather have a unique name, mine is very common and I hated it in high school, somone would yell my name and honestly at least 30 girls turned around.
Reply:Neither. I would rather have a traditional sounding, traditional spelled name that's not in common use (thus making it unique)
Reply:Unique.

I believe mine is quite unique...

Evelyne Lacey Knox... meh.

I don't like many common names.
Reply:Unique unless it was name that was unique because it was awful
Reply:a unique one...but not a crazy unique one

my name is not unique, it's "normal" but it's not very common either :D
Reply:My name is Kaitlyn, and I mean I like my name but so many people are name Kaitlyn.

So I would want a PRETTY but very unique name.
Reply:I would prefer to have a name that is unique. I try to stay away from the overly popular names.
Reply:A very funky unique name like my family and my name Merrick Brice-Baliton!
Reply:A middle ground

My daughter's name is Karisma. Its unique and very easily pronounced.
Reply:I would rather have a very popular name. A lot of kids with unique names get made fun of.
Reply:UNIQUE!!! I love my name and most everyone does stumble and struggle to get it right, whether written or verbal.
