There was a court ruling because a 9 year old girl has an awful name. Tula does the hula in Hawaii. They let other names pass like Number 16 bus shelter, Violent, Fish and chips and one called Yeah Detroit. I think those names are awful and cruel. I like original and unique names but jeez these are your children. A girl on Yahoo wants to name her children Axelle Rose(yes,its the lead singer's name in Guns and Roses). Also wants her son Harley something I can't remember but it wasn't good.

Ivan is okay, but when I think of Ivan I think of 'Ivan the terrible'.

Help, my first child and I want a unique name?

I am 18 years old, and I am 7 weeks pregnant (please don't judge me) I am trying to think about baby names. I'd like names that are unique, and new. But when they are said there's not a huge reaction like..."oh my word who would call a child that" Sort of thing. eg. Apple, Brooklyn.

I also like names that are old fashioned such as Bethany, and ruth, but are there any spin offs of those names?

Reply:If you like older names that are unique look to some of the less commonly used biblical names: Ester, Ruth, Ishmael, Jonah, Ezekiel, Zebadiah. Check out the old testament, there are some beautiful names there that won't be commonly heard on the playground.

I'm glad that you want an unusual name but not one of those trendy names. Don't go too far with the name (unusual spellings are generally ugly, and unique variations may sound cute now, but remember your child will be an adult one day).

As far as spin-offs go, I think it's always best if you give your child a 'normal' name, but use a 'spin-off' as a nickname.

They are Magdalen Grace (Maggie), Marrin Rose, Elaina Marie (Ellie), Gabriel Steven (Gabe), Jacob Ross ( Jake), and Connor James. But some other good ones are Evelyn, Isabella, Arabella, Amelia, Wyatt, Michael, Aidan, and Benjamin.

Second, I advise you to use a proper name, original and rare, but not anything like apple etc.

Being Greek, I would advise you to choose a name from the Greek mythology. They are beautiful and rare names: How about Electra, Antigone, Kassandra, Daphne or Cleopatra for a girl, and Orestes or Hermes or Ares or Solon for a boy.

It doesn't matter how old you are as long as you love him or her and I'm sure you will. My little girl is called Freya Mae. Freya is the goddess of love and fertility. I was adamant I was having a boy and my mums best friend loved that girls name. When she was born I gave her that name. That lady is now her godmother. Freya loves her name. Its unusual but feminine. That name HAS to be the most annoying, overused "unique" name ever.

Anyways... Now that THAT particular rant is over...

Unique is good, but all names really are, if you're going by sound is a bunch of syllables stuck together in a sequence that is pleasing to your auditory nerves, which basically = bull**** if that's all you're choosing a name based on.

Here's a way to find a great name: Look up yours, or the baby's father's ancestry, look up names related to your ethnic background, and find one who's sound and meaning that you like.

Also, sometimes it's a person who makes a name great.

Name the baby after a family member, or a friend who's name you might like just because they're so nice, it makes the name, or related sounding names remind you of a person with positive character traits like theirs.

Just, whatever you do, avoid the top 10 baby names unless you have a really great reason (other than "It sounds cool") to name your kid that...

Oh, yeah... Forgot to mention, if there is a particular character trait that you find admirable, such as: Honesty, steadfastness, loveable, charitable, giving, kind... Even physical traits, such as good looking, beautiful, dark, etc...

Just google "baby name meaning -----------" and you will find some neat results.

But,again... if you name by sound, you could end up naming your kid something like Kennedy (which means "ugly head), or Trinity (meaning 3)

For any of you out there with unique, different names. What is your name?Mine is JoLynne Ean(pronounced Eee-Yahn/ Ian-guys name). I never liked my name when I was younger. I always wanted a normal name, but as I got older I appreciated my name more. So do you have a story behind your unique name? My name is Arizona Leigha. Unique I guess you could say. My father named me. My mother gave me my middle name Leigha. My mother was resting when the papers came to finalize my name. My father filled them out and made my mother sign them while she was still drowsy. My mother had been calling me Jennifer all morning. I love my name and always have though, and I loved when my friends called my Rizzo when I was a kid!

If you like sport etc then a players name can be quite cool. We called our last kitten Eto'o after the Barcelona and Cameroon player. Never heard of any other kitten with the same name. Also anything cute and repetitive like Bebe, Lily, Nina. I think they really suit little kittens. Any musicians names etc are cool. Ive got a friend named Zephaniah after Benjamin Zephaniah the writer. I think thats really cool. But as for kittens I am really into reggae music so was thinkin of Zion for my next kitten.
